The IIBM is part of the CSIC's Science 4 Policy project

"Metabolic Diseases: Epidemics of the 21st Century" is the proposal chosen by the CSIC as part of the Science 4 Policy project. This report, in which Drs. María Monsalve and Ángela M. Valverde from the Department of Metabolic and Immune Diseases of the IIBM participate, will be collected in a special issue to be published in April 2024.

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has announced the selection of the proposal "Metabolic Diseases: Epidemics of the 21st Century" as an outstanding contribution to the Science 4 Policy project. The report, coordinated by Dr. German Perdomo, from the Physiopathology of Metabolic Diseases group at the Valladolid Institute of Biomedicine and Molecular Genetics (IBGM, CSIC-UVA) in Valladolid, will emerge as a key reference in addressing current health challenges. This report will be collected in a special issue scheduled for publication in April 2024, thus consolidating its impact at the intersection between scientific research and public policy making. The objective of the Science 4 Policy reports is to build an effective bridge between the scientific and political spheres in order to make future policy decisions supported by scientific evidence.

In this proposal Dr. María Monsalve and Dr. Ángela M. Valderde participate together with other CSIC researchers: Dr. María Ángeles Martín, from the Institute of Food Science and Technology and Nutrition (ICTAN) in Madrid, Dr. Marc Liesa, from the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB), Dr. Yolanda Sanz, from the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA) in Valencia, and Dr. German Perdomo. All of them have met at CSIC with Eloísa del Pino, president of CSIC, in her commitment to promote information and advice on science and technology to public and private entities.

What is this proposal about?

74% of deaths worldwide are linked to overweight, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and hypertension. This report aims to assess in detail the health problem associated with these conditions, which lead to an increased risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, with consequent health, social and economic costs. It will address fundamental concepts and highlight innovative lines of CSIC research, addressing both basic and applied research.

What are the goals of the report?

The report "Metabolic Diseases: Epidemics of the 21st Century" will focus on comprehensively addressing the challenges raised by the increase in metabolic diseases and their impact on today's society. This report will clarify the fundamental concepts that explain the causes of metabolic diseases and provide details of the different lines of CSIC research and innovation in this field. Finally, the report will elaborate recommendations based on scientific evidence addressed to policy makers, biomedical entities and society in general with the aim of containing these diseases.

With Science 4 Policy initiatives, the CSIC aims to make the science generated by CSIC researchers accessible to society, as well as to promote the use of this knowledge by public and private political entities in order to improve the well-being and health of the population.
