  • The breast cancer research of two scientists from the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Sols-Morreale has been recognized by the Fundación Contigo

The Scientific Committee of Fundación Contigo has awarded the II Esther Balletbó Fellowship, endowed with €80,000, to researchers José David Sarrió López and Gema Moreno Bueno from the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Sols-Morreale (IIBM), CSIC-UAM and members of CIBERONC. The grant will support the project entitled “Validation of genetic variants involved in the clinical behavior of breast and endometrial cancer.” This study will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Laura Costas, an epidemiologist at the Instituto Catalán de Oncología (ICO), the reference oncology center for more than 40% of the adult population in Catalonia.

The research grant was presented during the third edition of “La Noche por el Cáncer de Mama” organized by Fundación Contigo against women’s cancer, on October 22, 2024, at La Llotja de Mar, Barcelona. The award was presented by the President of Fundación Contigo, Dr. Javier Cortés, and by the trustee Doña Clara Balletbó, daughter of Esther Balletbó, who passed away from metastatic breast cancer and whose name graces the Contigo Research Fellowship.

The research project focuses on the study of polymorphic genetic variations in women and their possible association with the initiation and/or clinical course of breast and endometrial cancer.

The IIBM congratulates the awardees.
